Unlike big players such as Apple, HTC and Samsung, Lenovo possesses an advantage which the big companies do not – at least in selected countries. The Chinese market already displays Lenovo’s smartphone market share among the top 3. Thanks to Lenovo’s aggressive strategy with higher sales channels, the company could be one day even leave behind Samsung smartphones in Asia and Africa. That said, Lenovo has delivered a variety of electronics and it has come up with low to high budget smartphones for their long range of customers.

Lenovo has tried focusing on the Nigerian market as well where it aims to provide reasonably priced phones. Among the latest ones the Lenovo A6000 has been developed which aims to create quality specs for daily usage. The A6000 might be a key aspect in the mid-range smartphone market as it has been aimed with a theme which says – “Entertainment on a budget”. This makes the phone deliver decent features for keeping one entertained with media, games, music, etc. Moreover, the device has been said to be the cheapest 4G LTE phone available in the market. But, how well-versed is this new phone? Does it pack the power to intrigue its users? That all can be known through the following features and characteristics about the phone, let’s take a look.

Externals: Design and Display:

Being a budget phone, its body has not been emphasized on much. That is why it features a plastic body which looks of decent quality. Lenovo’s official brand name can be seen printed at the back of the phone. The speakers, featuring Dolby Digital technology, are behind the phone at the bottom and are able to deliver commendable sound quality. You get the phone only in black variant. Talking about the screen size – the Lenovo A6000 offers a 5 inch capacitive touchscreen display with 16 M colours. You get 720 by 1280 pixels at 294 ppi density.

Looking at the phone from a normal angle will make sure that the pixels look smooth enough. But, when one tries to look through the pixels from a nearer angle, then there might be irregularity in the layout. The weight of the phone is at 128 g which is easy to hold. However, the plastic body has a matte finish, but it can still be a little slippery to hold which is why a decent cover is advisable to keep it safe. However, the volume rockers and power button quality is not that good but what all are you expecting at such a low budget? Overall, the screen is quite suitable at a low price.

Internals: Hardware and Software:

The Lenovo A6000 features a 1.2 GHz quad-core process with an impressive Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 chipset. Being a budget phone, it still has the decency to pack in a Snapdragon chipset which is quite remarkable. This also shows that Lenovo means business while entering the smartphone market with its flagship devices. While the Snapdragon processor chip is not that high in model version, it still is Snapdragon which is a major step for low budget smartphones. Just by hearing the name Snapdragon users tend to be impressed, so, why not with this one?

Besides the chipset, Lenovo A6000 also possesses 1 GB RAM with 8 GB internal storage. It also features an expandable slot up to 32 GB. Surely the internal storage might take up one GB or more for the preinstalled apps and software which is understandable. But, 1 GB RAM might be a disappointment for many. If only the phone could have possessed more RAM it could deliver more. It has been provided with Android v4.4 (Kitkat) first hand. An upgrade for the next version of Android is not yet decided. On top of that, the phone features Lenovo’s interface – Vibe UI 2.0. Among other software features, the Lenovo A6000 also supports Java which is a plus point.
All these software chips are supported with a 2300mAh battery which is alright to run all the apps, etc. But, how well it will stick to the juice is yet to be seen. Packing up a decent processor might take up power for a budget phone. So, let’s hope that the battery supports the processor chips and apps efficiently.

Camera and Connectivity:

One of the key features that every phone possesses is its camera. Users from all over the world will always take a look at the camera offered in the phone they are about to buy. However, if Lenovo A6000 gave a plus point with the chipset used in the phone, it took away the camera quality. The A6000 provides an 8 MP rear camera with LED flash. Pictures clicked with this camera were decent but not impressive. If used in daylight, the pictures are quite good, but low light imagery is still quite backward. It is quite disappointing that a phone aimed for entertainment does not possess a good quality camera. This is to be noted that MP does not tell how well a picture quality can be. It is the sensor used in the camera which is surely not that good.

Yet, it can be a good phone for daylight picture taking. Beside the rear camera, it also has a 2 MP front camera which unfortunately would deliver high-quality pictures in low light. The rear camera has still been offered with a supporting LED flash for low lights, but that is not the case for the front one. So, the ones who are fond of taking selfies might need bright light to be able to click decent images. Video recording is feature at 720p @30 fps. So, the spark needed for the camera is missing in the phone, but it can still be covered up because of the technology chips used in the phone for a fast processor.
Talking about the connectivity of the phone, the Lenovo A6000 supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. It also features GPS and Bluetooth v4.0. NFC users might be a little disappointed as there is no NFC. Besides that, you would not be provided with Infrared connectivity either. No DLNA, HDMI or Wi-Fi Direct is also provided. You do get FM though. It has two SIM slots which require micro-SIM. The SIM used in is GSM. Plus, it supports 3G. The second SIM also features the same characteristics with an extra addition. You get 4G LTE (only for Indian markets) in this one. Now, that is something worth commending. Lenovo has broken the walls in the smartphone world by offering the cheapest 4G LTE enabled smartphone for the users.
Taking a look at the sensors – you get proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, accelerometer, and gyroscope. You are not provided with a compass or magnetometer, barometer or temperature sensor. Sensors offered by Lenovo are good quality ones. They perform their respective jobs without any issues.

Conclusion:

When it comes to a good quality smartphone, there are a number of features involved. Design and display are there, but the specs are also the key to a decent-quality handset. Lenovo has kept its quality high in other electronic fields and it does not want to be considered a low level player in the market that most other companies are featured as. It might have entered the smartphone market a little late, but it is nowhere ready to be outrun by the big players. This is why, with the launch of its flagship phones like the Lenovo A6000, it is ready to deliver high processing power at a low budget to the people. This is to ensure that it believes in quality product but still wants to be easy on the pockets of its customers.
Looking at the phone, it does need to have a better camera which is not that good compared to other phones in this range, but addition of Snapdragon chipset will make use of the best technology in this range for the phone. If one looks up to see what all other features are there in the phone, then surely it is an overall satisfaction that the money invested will not be in vain. Another downside to be considered is the display glass usage which is not that protective and might break with a little impact. Tempered glass protection is therefore advisable over it. The phone does come with 4G LTE but it is yet to be used in Nigeria. With such phones in the market, Lenovo will definitely rise up and challenge the big players in the upcoming years. The price tagged for the phone is 169 USD in the Nigerian market. So, grab one of these colour-filled entertainment phones for your daily purposes and surely you would love using them.
